Project CODE Holds Inaugural Symposium on Political Violence and Domestic Extremism

Washington, D.C. June 14, 2023 – Today, as we mark two years since the release of the National Strategy to Counter Domestic Terrorism, Project CODE (Collaborative Organizations to End Domestic Extremism) held its inaugural symposium focused on addressing rising political violence and domestic extremism in the United States. Founded in June 2022, Project CODE is dedicated to fostering partnerships between cross-sector organizations whose communities are affected by political violence. Convened by the Anti-Defamation League and the National Urban League, the initiative serves as a collaborative hub for organizations to share best practices and trends, and to collectively address, respond to, and mitigate rising threats on the state and federal level. In the spirit of Project CODE’s guiding principles, the initiative convened experts including government officials, thought leaders, and community organizations to: assess the effectiveness of the government’s interagency response to extremism and political violence, identify gaps, and plan for collaborative action as we prepare for the 2024 elections.

Additionally, Project CODE was honored to host the Honorable Rob Silvers, Under Secretary for Strategy, Policy, and Plans at the Department of Homeland Security who was in conversation with Farah Pandith, ADL Senior Advisor.

Project CODE, founded with the intention of eradicating barriers that impede communities and NGOs from collectively addressing political violence, was honored to host 57 organizations. These groups, representing diverse communities and issue areas, in addition to expert speakers working on the ground and in academia to address this growing threat, are a reflection of Project CODE’s commitment to fostering cross-sector communication and collaboration.

Political violence is an existential threat to our democracy and requires a whole of society approach to stem its spread. The members of Project CODE and their broader networks are committed to seeking collaborative solutions and to sharing tools that other communities can utilize to address future threats.
